Rules for All Teams & Grades

  • MSHSAA rules apply except for the following changes.
  • After the seventh team foul in a half, opponents are awarded a 1-and-1 free throw, unless it is an offensive foul. After the 10th team foul in a half, opponents are awarded two free throws, except for on offensive fouls.
  • If a player fouls out leaving the team with less than five eligible players, the team with the disqualified player(s) will play with less than 5 players while the opposing team continues playing with 5.
  • Mercy Rule: 15-point differential—Running Clock both halves

  • Any technical fouls on players or coaches will be reviewed by board, and could deem suspension or dismissal from JYBA
  • There will be ABSOLUTELY NO tolerance for foul language or any other form of inappropriate behaviors.
  • No Zone Defense.

  • One, 2-minute Overtime, followed by one 2-minute sudden death overtime if the score is still tied after the first overtime. Each overtime will begin with a jump ball. If the score is still tied following the sudden death overtime, we will move to a free throw shoot off. Each team will shoot a free throw until a team makes it. If the team that shoots first makes their shot, the other team will have a chance to match. Only one shooter per team.
  • Timeouts: 3 per game. Only one additional timeout (total) for all overtime periods. All timeouts are one minute in length and clock stops on all timeouts.
  • Halftime: 5 minutes as long as games are on schedule.

Rules Specific to 2nd Grade

  • Goal Height: 8ft Goals
  • Two, 15-minute halves running clock with play stopping every 5 min for subs.

  • Clock stops the last minute of both halves
  • Free Throw Line: 12ft

  • No double team.
  • Teams must play defense behind the “white volleyball line” until last two minutes of game—then defenses will be allowed to pick up at half court (unless team is winning by 10 or more)

Rules Specific to 3rd-6th Grades

  • Goal Height:
    • 3rd Grade Boys and 3/4 Girls: 9ft
    • All others: 10ft
  • 18-minute halves-running clock
  • Clock stops in the last two minutes of the 2nd half.

  • Free Throw Line:
    • 3rd and 4th Grade: 12ft
    • 5th and 6th Grade: 15ft

  • Defense Rules:
    • 3rd & 4th grades—No double team
    • 5th & 6th grades—Double team is allowed as long as man-to-man is base defense.
  • Pressing Rules:
    • 3rd & 4th grades:
      • No full-court press
      • Can pick up at half-court unless winning by 15 or more in 2nd half and then fall back to top of the key
    • 5th & 6th grades:
      • Can Press the last 10 minutes of the 2nd half unless up by 10.
      • Team up by 10 in the second half needs to play behind the top of the key.
